Hello Fedi friends,

It's been a while since the last update on my self-hosting adventures. Long story short, I've been really busy promoting the Fediverse, with little to no free time to engage in self-hosting experimentations.

Just in the past 2 weeks I was interviewed on three different podcasts (Libre Γ  Vous, Projets Libres and Fireside Fedi) and I gave the opening keynote at Berlin Fedi Day (for which I had to prepare slides and practice). Plus I had to edit the German voice-over narration of my Fedi promo video that premiered in Berlin right after my talk. With all this going on I had no mental bandwidth to take on new self-hosting projects.

This past Friday Ozoned - the amazing host of Fireside Fedi - asked me what I will self-host next. He highly recommended Bonfire but actually this weekend I had an epiphany... I'm going in another direction.

I would love to liberate my media library and host the movies, TV shows and music I own on a private home server powered by Jellyfin. Down with the tyranny of streaming subscriptions! Welcome media sovereignty and independence thanks to a wonderful FOSS tool.

What inspired this change?

The realization that the only reason why our family was paying for Disney+ every month was simply to stream Bluey. When I received an email from Disney+ announcing a price hike - and following all that went down with Jimmy Kimmel in the U.S. - I made a quick calculation. The DVD boxset of Bluey for seasons 1-3 costs 46 Euros... the equivalent of 5 months of Disney+. There are so many affordable DVDs I can get from flea markets... spending tens of Euros every month on streaming services makes no sense.

Plus: my rich, wonderful music library that I carefully cultivated from my teens to my 30s is now being held hostage on an old hard drive because Apple decided to retire iTunes and push its music streaming service "Music".

I cannot wait to move all my media to Jellyfin. I see this as my next big project for the rest of the year.

So many things to decide first though, like: do I get a NAS or use my Raspberry Pi connected to an external hard drive? Or maybe repurpose an old Macbook?

If you have any advice about this, I'm all ears.

Have a great week!

Elena
